Dr Carol McDonald Connor

June 17, 2020
Island Reporter, Captiva Current, Sanibel-Captiva Islander

Dr. Carol McDonald Connor was a Chancellor's Professor of Education at the University of California Irvine School of Education. She was a highly respected trailblazer in early childhood education research and the science of reading. A colleague said that Dr. Connor will be remembered for her "tireless energy, her kind heart, her fierce intellect and amazing empathy".

In addition to being the recipient of many distinguished awards for her work and doing some of the most innovative research on classroom instruction in the world, she was also a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend to many.

Sanibel and Captiva were always home to Carol no matter where she lived. As a young child she visited her grandparents here and later her mother and sister. Spring break was celebrated every year on Captiva and since 2011 Christmas on Captiva became a tradition. Her oldest daughter's wedding was at South Seas Island Resort. These islands hold many treasured memories of Carol.

Carol lost her valiant and incredibly courageous battle with ovarian cancer on May 14, 2020 and is survived by her mother, Ann-Eve McDonald (Captiva), the love-of-her-life and husband, Joseph (Jay) Connor, along with their children, Jessica and Bill Hudak, Kerianne and Nick Lentz, and Patrick and Sarika Connor, their grandchildren: Josephine, Lillian, Jacob, and Wyatt all live in Southern California. Carol is also survived by her siblings: Lianne Mech, John McDonald, Kate Sergeant (Sanibel) and their spouses and children.

The world was indeed a better place because Carol was in it. She was deeply loved and will be terribly missed.

In lieu flowers, the family has established a fund to honor Carol's passion for educational research and children's reading success: The Dr. Carol Connor Fund. Tax deductible donations can be made on line at: charitableventuresoc.kindful.com.
