Oscar the Octopus to appear at show

February 27, 2019
Island Reporter, Captiva Current, Sanibel-Captiva Islander

Oscar the Octopus, created by Diane Segger of Punta Gorda, will be on exhibit at the Sanibel Shell Show. The piece is 2 feet high and 40 inches on each side and weighs 82 pounds. His legs-appendages are approximately 4 1/2 long. Oscar is made of over 10,000 shells, which were gathered by Segger in 2015, mostly on Manasota Key and Gasparilla Island, plus pen shells, driftwood and oyster shells found in years previous. After two years of conceptualizing and developing a plan for how to structure such a creature, the artist began the sculpture. It took her over 400 hours to complete it. The Sanibel Shell Show will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 7-8 and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 9 at The Community House, at 2173 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel.
