Hirdie Girdie spotlights three artists for month

January 11, 2019
Island Reporter, Captiva Current, Sanibel-Captiva Islander

Hirdie Girdie Gallery is highlighting three member artists in January.

Sue Housler holds a BFA from the State University of New York at Buffalo and has experience in several art mediums. In recent years, she has focused on creating art tiles, which she forms, decorates, paints and glazes by hand. Her artwork reflects her love of the beauty of nature, and her subjects often include flowers and sea life. Housler frames most of her tiles to be hung as wall art.

Keith Johnson was a professional photographer in Minnesota and also pursued his love of watercolor painting. Since moving to Florida, he has been painting mostly in plein air, and his paintings have won awards. Johnson paints in a loosely realistic style, which captures the essence of the scene without being overly detailed. Among his favorite subjects are the beaches of Sanibel and Captiva.

SUE HOUSLER

Sandy O'Grady began her artistic journey only a few years ago, but her talent at creating pine needle basketry is evident. She embellishes her creations with natural objects such as shells, feathers, plant parts and pinecones, and she also creates her own pottery bases for some of her baskets. O'Grady is always experimenting with new techniques and ideas, and has extended her artwork to include pine needle wall hangings and carved and decorated gourds.
