Officer John Eicher was hired by the Sanibel Police Department in August 2012 as a part-time police officer, before being brought on full-time in December of the same year. Currently as a detective, Eicher was presented with a Life Saving Award at the Tuesday, Aug. 1 City Council meeting by Mayor Kevin Ruane for responding to Sanibel Cottages on Sunday, June 4 to an unresponsive person, Antonio D'Andrea. He deployed AED and administered CPR, which revived D'Andrea.

"Without the actions of Officer John Eicher, and others, I would not be here today to covey my deepest appreciation for your city's men and women who have dedicated their lives to service of others. However, I have to commend Officer John Eicher as going above and beyond the call of duty to help my family during this crisis," D'Andrea wrote in a letter addressed to City Manager Judie Zimomra.
